J. Leonardo (“Leo”) Gomez is a senior associate in the Deerfield Beach office of Roig Lawyers.
Leo’s practice focuses on defending some of the nation’s largest insurance carriers and its insureds. Leo has extensive experience handling Examinations Under Oath (EUO), Fraud (SIU) Investigations, litigating complex insurance matters as well as Personal Injury Protection (PIP) in Florida State courts. Leo handles both Plaintiff and Defense civil cases from inception, through litigation including written discovery, deposing of any type of witness, pre-trial preparation and co-chairing at trial. Leo has managed and defended PIP claims on the basis of material misrepresentations, coverage, unlawful treatment, unlawful licensing, medical necessity, fraud, false and misleading statements, the reasonableness of charge(s) and the necessity of medical treatment. Leo guides and advises clients to effectuate the most efficient and inexpensive way to issue resolution, which may include mediation and arbitration.
Prior to joining the firm, Leo worked as an associate at small and medium sized firms, including a full service law firm where he handled over 15,000 consultations, evaluating legal issues ranging from: Contract Review, Bodily Injury, Uninsured Motorist and Property Claims, as well as Premises and Products Liability, Workers' Compensation, Medical Malpractice, Wrongful Death and commercial matters. Leo gained litigation experience at an insurance defense firm handling EUOs, Mass Global Settlements, Mediations, covering Contested Hearings and Pre-Trial preparation. Also, Leo practiced at a small boutique personal injury law firm in Broward County handling pre-trial investigations, marketing, evaluation of claims and settlement.
Leo served as a National Recruiter for the New England School of Law, traveling throughout the United States representing his school’s recruitment program. He also performed contract work for the large multinational firm, Bingham McCutchen L.L.P. In addition, Leo executed various apprenticeships for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, serving as a Hearing Officer for the Office of Insurance Division where he handled insurance surcharge appeals. He also apprenticed at the Telecommunications Division where he handled research and followed legal bills to passage as statutes. Leo competed in the Honors Moot Court and Mock Trial Competitions while in law school.
In addition to the traditional American Legal Curriculum, Leo has also studied International Contracts and Negotiations Law in Barcelona Spain.
Born in Bogota, Colombia, Leo immigrated to Miami, Florida with his mother at around the age of five. He speaks and writes fluent Spanish.
